Your best sku has 40 sellers heres what thats costing you

When the channel runs the brand.

Many of the brands we work with told us the same thing before we ran the numbers: our distribution is under control. Then we pull the seller count on a top SKU and find the opposite. A single coilover kit listing with forty sellers. A UTV accessory advertised at 40% off across half a dozen storefronts nobody authorized. The channel is making pricing decisions the brand never signed off on — and it’s happening in plain sight.

The listing you stopped watching is setting the price.

When a flagship product carries dozens of sellers, the Buy Box goes to whoever discounts hardest, not whoever represents the brand best. Every race to the bottom trains your customers to wait for the next markdown and trains your authorized dealers to question why they hold the line at all. Whether it’s brake kits, suspension components, or powersports upgrades, they all follow the same curve: more sellers, lower advertised prices, thinner margins for everyone still playing fair.

That erosion doesn’t correct itself. It compounds. The cheapest listing quietly becomes the reference price for your entire channel, and the brand loses the one asset it can’t easily rebuild — pricing authority. Fewer sellers, higher advertised prices, a stronger brand. That’s the math, and it runs in exactly one direction once you lose the top of the funnel.

Diversion doesn’t announce itself.

The seller you’ve never heard of didn’t appear out of nowhere. Product reaches the grey market through an authorized account somewhere upstream — overstock sold off quietly, a distributor moving volume through a side door, inventory crossing a border it was never meant to cross. By the time discounted product surfaces on a marketplace, it has changed hands two or three times and the trail looks cold.

It isn’t. Every diverted unit traces back to a source, and that source is almost always inside your approved network. Brands that treat unauthorized sellers as an outside problem spend their time chasing symptoms — filing takedowns, sending cease letters, watching the same product reappear a week later under a new storefront name. The leak is internal, and it stays open until someone maps it back to the account feeding it.

Monitoring tells you there’s a problem. We stop it.

Knowing your product is being discounted across six marketplaces is not the same as doing something about it. Most brands can already see the symptoms. What they can’t see is the structure underneath — who the sellers really are, where the product is coming from, and which authorized relationship is the actual point of leakage.

That’s the work we do. We have processes that map every seller back to its source, trace diverted product upstream to the account supplying it, and build the documented evidence — test buys, material differences, pricing records — that turns a suspicion into an enforceable case. Then we act on it. Visibility is where control starts, not where it ends.

Your brand earned its pricing power through the engineering, the R&D, and the reputation you built with dealers who represent you the right way. The channel should reflect that, and right now most of them don’t.
